The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Honourable Elemide Oludaisi, has pledged to address the grievances of communities in Obafemi Owode Local Government over alleged land grabbing.

The commitment was made during a protest at the State House of Assembly on Tuesday.

Residents of Agboro and Latunde communities had accused the Olu of Obafe, Taofeek Owolabi, of forcefully taking over 500 hectares of their land.

In response to the protest, Hon. Elemide reassured the protesters of the state’s zero tolerance for land grabbing, echoing recent warnings from Governor Dapo Abiodun to monarchs about illegal land sales.

“We have passed a law on anti-grabbing and anti-cultism. You have brought your petition, and we will treat it accordingly. Recently, the Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, issued warnings to the monarchs at the Obas Council that 1Elemide stated.

“This government has zero tolerance for land grabbing. So, we are going to invite all stakeholders concerned on the matter, and we will come back with our reports.”

Honourable Chief Adeoye Olaseni, a stakeholder in the Latunde community, provided details to the speaker and other Assembly members about the reasons for the protest.

He highlighted several grievances, including the offer of N200,000 per hectare of land to the communities, instances of violence, and the clearing of farm crops such as kolanut, cocoa, cashew, mango, palm trees, plantain, cassava, maize, and vegetables.

Additionally, the communities alleged that the monarch had blocked their primary water source, leaving them reliant on an unhealthy lake for water.

The Speaker assured the communities that their petitions would be thoroughly reviewed to resolve the land dispute.
