Five police officers attached to the Zone 6 Police Headquarters in Cross River State have been arrested for allegedly abducting and extorting the sum of N3million from a victim.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the incident occurred while the officers were on patrol along the Ikom-Calabar highway.
The Zonal Police Public Relations Officer (ZPRO), SP Nelson Okpabi, revealed this in a press statement issued on Tuesday.
He said the officers are being accused of engaging in corrupt practices and unprofessional conduct.
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Zone 6 Headquarters Calabar, Jonathan Towuru, expressed strong disapproval of the officers’ actions.
“The AIG has ordered a high-powered investigation into the matter to uncover the facts behind the allegations for an informed disciplinary measure to be taken,” Okpabi stated.
He emphasised that the alleged misconduct of the officers has tarnished the integrity of the force.
SP Okpabi detailed that the alleged incident involved the officers abducting an individual and coercing them into parting with the substantial sum of money.
The AIG’s directive for a thorough investigation underscores the seriousness of the allegations and the need for accountability within the force.
“The five officers have been taken into custody and an investigation has commenced,” Okpabi continued.
He highlighted that the outcome of the investigation would lead to appropriate disciplinary actions, including possible prosecution.
This move is intended to serve as a deterrent to other officers who might engage in similar conduct.
The AIG’s commitment to transparency in the process was also emphasised.
“The outcome of the investigation and disciplinary measures, including orderly trial and possible prosecution, would be made known to the public in due course,” Okpabi assured.
