The Commander and Chief Executive Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Cdr. ‘Seni Ogunyemi, has firmly reminded officers of their duty to uphold integrity by rejecting bribes and extortion.
This directive was given during a one-day symposium themed “Legality of Traffic Management: An Overview of the TRACE Law of Ogun State,” held at the Staff Development Centre, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta.
Addressing officers from the Ogun Central Command, Cdr. Ogunyemi emphasized the importance of efficiency and responsible conduct in traffic management.
He urged the officers to be passionate about their duties, maintain a positive attitude, and adhere strictly to the TRACE law while dealing with motorists.
“Do not take bribes from anyone, and do not extort motorists on our roads. Perform your duties diligently and with passion.
“ Be happy and appreciate yourself while on duty. Avoid arguments; instead, be calm, use wisdom, and let the law guide your actions in every situation,” Ogunyemi stated.
He further stressed the necessity of officers being well-versed in the TRACE law and their responsibilities, especially when handling confrontations with aggressive motorists.
In his opening address, the Area Commander for Abeokuta and its environs, Cdr. Idowu Sonde, highlighted the significance of the symposium.
He pointed out that the event reflected TRACE’s commitment to enhancing the skills and knowledge of its operatives.
“Our role in ensuring the safety of road users is crucial and requires constant updates on the latest techniques, technologies, and best practices,” Sonde noted.
The symposium featured a lecture by the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Service Matters, Barr. Oladipupo Ogunfowora, titled “Understanding Public Service Rules for TRACE Officers: Ensuring Compliance and Accountability.”
Barr. Ogunfowora underscored the necessity for discipline and proper conduct among TRACE officers.
He advised them to avoid behaviors such as dishonesty, improper dressing, corruption, and insubordination, and to familiarize themselves thoroughly with the Public Service Rules.
Barr. Toyin Sonoiki, Director of Legal Services at TRACE, served as the facilitator for the event.
She explained that the TRACE law equips officers with the authority needed to manage traffic effectively without the use of force.
“The law empowers you to arrest or apprehend vehicles and issue tickets to offenders. Use this power wisely, avoid aggression, and collaborate with the police or Amotekun when necessary,” she advised.
Participants, including Officers Enitan Babatunde and Olaoluwa Familusi from the Abeokuta and Obantoko Area Commands, expressed their gratitude for the training.
They noted that the symposium had better equipped them to understand and enforce the laws governing TRACE operatives in Ogun State.
The symposium reinforced TRACE’s dedication to fostering a culture of integrity and professionalism among its officers, ensuring that they are well-prepared to handle the complexities of traffic management in Ogun State
