A devastating thunderstorm on Monday resulted in the tragic deaths of four individuals at the bustling Jattu Market in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.

PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the  incident occurred when trees were uprooted by strong winds during the rainfall, falling on unsuspecting market-goers seeking shelter beneath them.

Marvellous Zibiri, the chairman of Etsako West Local Government, confirmed the fatalities during a press briefing at the market site.

Zibiri provided a detailed account of the unfortunate events that led to the loss of lives and injuries among the market’s patrons.

“Between 8 am and 9 am on Monday, I received an urgent call from my vice chairman and the Supervisory Councillor for Environment regarding the tragic incident at Jattu Market,” Zibiri recounted.

“During the heavy rainfall, four trees fell simultaneously while people were taking cover beneath them, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and causing injuries to many others.”

Emergency response teams swiftly arrived at the scene to recover the bodies and attend to the injured.

The deceased have been transported to the mortuary, and those injured are currently receiving medical treatment at local hospitals.

“We have recovered four bodies so far and transported them to the mortuary,” Zibiri stated.

“The injured are in the hospital and are responding to treatment.”

The chairman emphasised the ongoing efforts to ensure no further casualties are discovered.

“This is a tragic incident,” Zibiri lamented, expressing his deep condolences to the families of the deceased.

“I urge residents to stay indoors during heavy rains to prevent such occurrences in the future.”
