The Jos Wildlife Park in Plateau State has reportedly recaptured a hyena that had earlier escaped from the facility, the Plateau State Tourism Corporation announced on Tuesday.
The hyena was found alive after an intensive search and was immediately sedated and returned to its enclosure, according to the statement released by the Corporation, led by Chuwang Pwajok.
The statement read, “The Management of Plateau State Tourism Corporation would like to inform the general public that after relentless search and rescue efforts, the missing hyena has finally been found, tranquilised, captured and safely returned to its enclosure. We deeply appreciate the general public for remaining calm and cooperative. This greatly assisted in the search and rescue of the animal. Thank you.”
PLATFORM TIMES had reported the hyena’s escape, which had sparked anxiety and fear among residents of the Dong Community in Jos North Local Government Area.
The incident prompted swift action from park authorities to mitigate the potential danger posed by the escaped animal.
The park’s management has dismissed claims that the hyena’s escape was due to neglect or starvation, clarifying the circumstances surrounding the incident.
They attributed recent challenges at the park to years of neglect, but assured the public that efforts are underway to address these issues and improve operations.
“The hyena’s escape was not a result of negligence or poor care,” the statement stated.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all animals in our care.
The park has faced numerous challenges over the years, but we are taking concrete steps towards revitalization and better management.”
The Jos Wildlife Park, a key attraction in Plateau State, has been undergoing various improvements to enhance its facilities and ensure the safety of both visitors and animals.
The recent incident has highlighted the need for continued investment and attention to the park’s infrastructure.
Residents of the Dong Community expressed relief at the news of the hyena’s capture. Many had feared for their safety and were concerned about potential attacks on livestock.
