The emergency meeting called by President Bola Tinubu with the labour leaders on the new minimum wage concluded without a resolution.
The meeting, held at the State House in Abuja, was attended by representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
The session was intended to address the pressing issue of implementing a new minimum wage, a topic that has been a significant concern for Nigeria’s workforce.
However, the talks ended inconclusively, with both parties agreeing to adjourn the discussions until next week.
This decision came after the labour leaders insisted on reporting back to their members before any agreement could be finalised.
During the meeting, Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, reiterated the labour unions’ demand for a minimum wage of N250,000.
This stands in stark contrast to the Federal Government’s proposal of N62,000.
The expectation of a new minimum wage has been a significant issue for Nigerians, particularly the country’s workforce, who have been eagerly awaiting a substantial increase to cope with the rising cost of living.
The current economic climate, marked by inflation and economic hardship, has intensified the demand for a wage increase.
