Operatives of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) have apprehended a woman identified as Precious Yusuf, who was caught attempting to smuggle drugs into the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abuja.

Precious Yusuf was nabbed on Tuesday during a routine search by vigilant correctional officers.

Disguised as a visitor, Yusuf attempted to bring contraband into the facility, concealing the drugs in food packs.

Her actions were uncovered when the officers conducted a thorough inspection of her items, revealing substances suspected to be Indian hemp and other dangerous drugs hidden within a carton.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by Adamu Duza, the spokesperson for the NCoS FCT Command, the suspect admitted to being dispatched to deliver the drugs to an inmate at the centre.

“The Nigerian Correctional Service, FCT Command has apprehended a lady called Precious Yusuf trying to push in drugs to an inmate of the Medium Security Custodial Centre Kuje, Abuja,” Duza confirmed.

He elaborated on the routine search process that led to the discovery, noting that Yusuf had attempted to use the guise of a visitor to bypass security measures.

The incident prompted swift action from the FCT Command’s leadership. Controller of Corrections, Ibrahim Usman, ordered Yusuf to be handed over to the Nigerian Drug Law Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.

This step underscores the seriousness with which the NCoS addresses attempts to smuggle illegal substances into their facilities.

Usman issued a stern warning to others who might consider similar actions, emphasizing the high alert status of his officers.

“Usman cautioned and warned drug peddlers to desist from trying to smuggle in illicit substances into the custodial centres in the guise of visits as his officers and men are on alert to deflate such a plot,” Duza relayed.
