A tragic incident occured on Friday in Jigawa State when a suspected smuggler killed an officer of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

The incident occurred during a stop-and-search operation on the Daura-Kano Road, resulting in the death of Inspector Hamza Elenwo, a member of the Federal Operations Unit Zone B.

According to Isah Sulaiman, the spokesman for the Federal Operations Unit Zone B of the NCS, the suspect, attempting to evade arrest, struck Inspector Elenwo with a vehicle believed to be smuggled into the country.

Inspector Elenwo, born on April 15, 1985, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, joined the Nigeria Customs Service as a Customs Assistant III (CAIII) in the Transport and Logistics Unit on October 17, 2013.

He was promoted to the rank of Inspector of Customs in 2022. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Following the incident, Inspector Elenwo was rushed to the General Hospital Kazaure and subsequently transferred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Katsina, where he was pronounced dead by the attending doctor.

His body was laid to rest in Katsina, in accordance with Islamic rites.

Comptroller Ahmadu Shuaibu, head of the Federal Operations Unit Zone B, extended his heartfelt condolences to Inspector Elenwo’s family on behalf of the entire unit.

He emphasised the unit’s commitment to ensuring justice for the deceased officer, noting that one suspect has been apprehended and is currently in the custody of the Nigeria Police Force, Gwiwa Division in Jigawa State.

In his statement, Comptroller Shuaibu condemned the growing violence against customs officers, lamenting  the dangers they face in their line of duty.

He vowed to intensify efforts to bring all those responsible to justice, stressing that the unit would not be deterred by such acts of violence.
