A Kwara State High Court has fixed August 2, 2024, for the judgement in the trial of six suspects linked to the notorious Offa bank robbery that occurred on April 5, 2018.
Justice Haleema Salman announced the date on Monday after adopting the final written addresses from both the prosecution and the defence.
The trial, which has spanned six years, involves six suspects: Ayoade Akinnibosun, Azeez Salahudeen, Niyi Ogundiran, Ibikunle Ogunleye, Adeola Abraham, and the late Michael Adikwu, a policeman who died in custody.
The prosecution, led by Rotimi Jacob (SAN), and the defence, represented by Mathew Emeribe, presented their arguments on points of law before the court.
Justice Salman noted that the August 2 date for judgement is tentative.
The suspects are accused of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, and the murder of over 30 people, including nine policemen, during the attack on five commercial banks in Offa.
The case has been fraught with controversy, including the death of Adikwu in police custody.
Justice Salman previously refused a request for a post-mortem analysis on Adikwu’s body, further complicating the case.
The five surviving suspects have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
