The Labour Party House of Representatives candidate for Abeokuta South Federal Constituency in the 2023 election, Tolulope Philips, has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State.
The announcement was made during a large gathering at the PDP secretariat in Abeokuta, the state capital, where Philips was formally received by the party’s leadership, including Hon. Ladi Adebutu, the party’s former governorship candidate.
Philips, accompanied by hundreds of his loyal supporters, expressed his intention to join forces with Adebutu to “liberate the state.”
Addressing journalists at the well-attended event, Philips lamented that his time in the Labour Party had not yielded the desired results.
He voiced his regret but, saying, he remained optimistic about his future prospects within the PDP.
“I realized that my time in the Labour Party was not yielding the desired results. I am hopeful that my move to the PDP will bring about the change I desire,” Philips stated.
“I am thrilled to be joining the PDP family. I am confident that this is the right decision for me and my supporters. I am grateful to my loyal supporters who have followed me to the PDP. I promise to work tirelessly to ensure that their trust in me is not misplaced.”
Philips further expressed his confidence in the PDP’s prospects for the 2027 elections, stressing his eagerness to make a meaningful impact on his constituents’ lives.
“I am confident that in 2027, PDP will be victorious in the elections. I am eager to get started and make a meaningful impact in the lives of my constituents.”
In a ceremonial gesture, the PDP leadership presented Philips with the party’s flag and a membership card, symbolising his official induction into the party.
Adebutu, while welcoming Philips, highlighted the party’s newfound unity and its readiness to contest and win future elections.
“We will run PDP together in love till we get the goal,” Adebutu declared.
He advised Philips against wasting resources and votes outside the PDP, referencing the previous election’s results. “Imagine the number of votes he wasted in that election?” Adebutu added.
Adebutu also took the opportunity to criticise the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), attributing the shortcomings of the last election to them and rallying Philips to join the PDP’s efforts to “liberate Ogun state.”
“We are delighted to have Tolulope Philips join our party. We are confident that PDP will emerge victorious in the 2027 election,” Adebutu concluded.
