The Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL) has issued a call to Nigeria’s anti-graft agencies, urging them to disclose the current status of their investigation into Betta Edu, the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
Edu was suspended following allegations of diverting a N585 million Federal Government grant intended for the vulnerable into private accounts.
CACOL’s Chairman, Debo Adeniran, in a statement signed by the Group’s Director of Administration and Programmes, Tola Oresanwo, emphasized the need for transparency.
The statement highlighted recent media reports that Edu sent condolences to the victims of the recent Jos building collapse using the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation’s letterhead.
The group questioned Edu’s actions, asking, “What is she insinuating with her action? Is she back to her desk as the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation? If she is back, don’t we have the right to know?”
“ They argued that while Edu has the right to express condolences to the families affected by the tragic incident, she should have done so in her personal capacity, given her suspension from the ministerial position.
“The condolences, which ought to be met with sympathy, caused a stir on social media as the minister was still expected to be grilled by the anti-graft agency,” CACOL noted.
The organization called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to inform Nigerians about the outcome of their investigations into Edu’s case.
CACOL’s statement reflected a broader concern among the public, with many fearing that the case might be quietly dismissed, given Edu’s significant influence within the ruling party.
“Already, most people are of the notion that the case will be swept under the carpet especially as she is a very strong and prominent member of the ruling party,” the statement added.
