His Royal Highness, Eze Cyprian Amadi-Worenwu, the Eze Risi Ohia-Emeri Abali of Rebisi in River State, has been remanded by the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt on charges related to cybercrime.
The monarch is accused of using electronic communication to threaten and harass a retired judge, Justice Adolphus Enebeli, instilling fear for his life.
The charge against Eze Amadi-Worenwu alleges that on March 28, 2023, he sent a menacing message to the phone number of one Sunday Gift-Chinenem.
The message reportedly threatened the life of Justice Enebeli, specifying that the monarch knew the workplace of the judge’s son and intimated that the retired judge would not live to enjoy his retirement.
The backdrop to these threats is a chieftaincy dispute that came before Justice Enebeli on March 20, 2023.
Eze Amadi-Worenwu was allegedly incensed by the judge’s decision not to rule in his favour in the suit against Christopher Wonodi and others.
This incident is said to have prompted the monarch’s hostile actions.
The specific offence contravenes Section 24 (1) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act of 2015, which deals with the transmission of threats via electronic means.
Following his arrest by detectives from the Rivers State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Eze Amadi-Worenwu had initially evaded police invitations before being detained.
In the courtroom, presided over by Justice Emmanuel Obele, an oral bail application put forth by defence counsel A.S. Amadi was firmly opposed by prosecution counsel ASP Welter Ogwuikpile.
Justice Obele denied the bail request, citing the gravity of the allegations, and ordered that the accused be remanded at the Port Harcourt Correctional Facility.
Justice Obele adjourned the case until July 29, 2024, for further consideration of the bail application.
