The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has pledged to develop innovative strategies and foster broader collaboration to combat the evolving trends in human trafficking.
This commitment was made by the Director General, Prof. Fatima Waziri-Azi, during the announcement of the 2024 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons activities at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
A statement signed by Communication Officer, NAPTIP, Adekoye Vincent read that the theme for this year’s observance, “Leave No Child Behind in the Fight Against Trafficking in Persons,” explains the urgent need to address child trafficking, which remains a significant global issue.
The statement further stated that the United Nations, which proclaimed July 30th as the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons in 2013, emphasises a human rights-based, gender- and age-sensitive approach to countering trafficking and protecting victims.
Prof. Waziri-Azi stressed the importance of the upcoming events, scheduled from July 28 to August 4, 2024, in raising awareness and reducing vulnerability among potential trafficking victims.
These activities, organized in collaboration with UNODC, IOM, ICMPD, and OHCHR, aim to reflect the theme and create impactful sensitization.
“This year, our activities and interventions are more inclusive, involving various stakeholders.
“For the first time, we will commemorate the day alongside the National Agency Against Trafficking in Persons (NAATIP) from The Gambia,” Prof. Waziri-Azi announced.
The statement added the events will kick off on July 27 with a female novelty match at the Wakanda Games Arena to symbolise the fight against human trafficking.
This will be followed by a Community Town Hall Dialogue on July 29, broadcast live on Radio Nigeria, to engage community stakeholders in discussing trafficking concerns and solutions.
An Awareness Walk will take place on July 30, starting at the Old Parade Ground and concluding at the Unity Fountain, with participation from State Task Forces on Human Trafficking across 23 states.
A Bootcamp for State Task Force members will follow from July 31 to August 2, providing intensive training and strategy sessions.
Additional activities include the Survivor’s Got Talent Grand Finale, awareness campaigns in places of worship and public spaces, and a robust online awareness campaign.
Prof. Waziri-Azi called on the public to join forces with NAPTIP in this critical effort.
“Let us amplify our efforts, fortify our resolve, and work tirelessly to create a world where every child can thrive in safety and dignity. Together, we can and must leave no child behind in this crucial fight,” she urged.
