A 28-year-old man, Kingsley Okoye, has lost his life in a shocking incident in Okpuno Umuogali, Oba community, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The sequence of events leading to Kingsley’s death began with a family dispute over property and resources.
According to a witness and cousin to the deceased, Kosisochukwu Samuel Uzoekwe, Joseph had previously sold a shared family property without giving Kingsley his share of the proceeds.
This left Kingsley in a precarious financial situation, struggling to make ends meet.
Desperate and hungry, Kingsley reportedly sold three doors from Joseph’s newly constructed house without permission to buy food.
Upon learning of the sale, Joseph allegedly sent money to their sister Ebele, instructing her to hire thugs to “discipline” Kingsley.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that Ebele contracted three individuals: Samuel Arinze, known as Jukwaaese; a man named Emeka, known as DPO; and another individual known only as Moon Boy.
The trio confronted Kingsley, beat him, and forcibly took him away on a motorcycle.
Kingsley was later found dead at Sahara Hospital in Oba, where he was confirmed dead upon arrival. His body was then taken to FAH Hospital and Embalming Center.
The tragic incident has led to conflicting accounts and accusations. While Uzoekwe pointed fingers at Ebele for facilitating the attack, Ebele denied any involvement. She claimed that Joseph’s fiancée, not her, was given the money to hire the thugs. Ebele expressed her sorrow over the incident, stating that she had been attending her children’s graduation when she heard the news.
In a statement, Joseph admitted to sending the thugs but maintained that his intention was not to kill his brother but to recover the stolen doors. He expressed shock over the death, insisting that the attack was meant to extract a confession from Kingsley about the whereabouts of the doors. Joseph claimed that he was on a video call with the attackers during the incident and that they assured him Kingsley was alive.
He expressed confusion and anger over the reported machete wounds on Kingsley’s body, which he said were not present during the call.
The incident has raised serious questions about the use of extrajudicial means to resolve disputes and the accountability of those involved.
The three hired thugs fled after leaving Kingsley’s body at the morgue, and their whereabouts are currently unknown.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, has not yet commented on the case, and attempts to reach him have been unsuccessful.
