EndBadGovernance: Military Warns Protest Organisers Against Anarchy, Vows To Protect National Stability

The Defence Headquarters has issued a stern warning to those planning to mobilise for the #EndBadGovernance protest scheduled from August 1 to 10, 2024.

While affirming the right of citizens to protest, the military emphasised that it would not tolerate any form of violence or anarchy.

Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, made this statement during a press conference in Abuja.

He highlighted concerns over potential plans by some groups to exploit the protests for destructive purposes, targeting innocent Nigerians and their businesses.

“While citizens have the right to peaceful protest, they do not have the right to mobilize for anarchy and unleash terror,” Buba stated.

He drew a parallel between the current situation and recent events in Kenya, where protests escalated into violence.

“The level of violence being envisaged can only be described as a stage for anarchy.

“The Armed Forces on its part will not stand by and allow anarchy to befall our nation,” he added.

The warning comes amid growing discontent among Nigerians, with the #EndBadGovernance movement highlighting widespread hunger and inflation as critical issues.

The movement’s organisers are pushing for governmental accountability and reforms, voicing frustrations over the socio-economic challenges facing the country.

The military’s firm stance recalls the controversial events of 2020, when a similar protest movement, #EndSARS, was met with military intervention.

The climax of that protest saw troops disperse demonstrators at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos, an action that sparked a national and international outcry.
