The Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA Global Resource Initiative), a prominent non-governmental organization focused on anti-corruption and justice, has reported former Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and current Governor Dapo Abiodun to the National Assembly, alleging that their actions may have contributed to the failure of the Olokola Dangote Refinery project.
The NGO called for an urgent investigation into the alleged economic sabotage of the project.
This move followed revelations made by Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Dangote Group, during a recent press briefing.
Dangote disclosed that the Olokola Dangote Refinery Project, intended to bolster Nigeria’s refining capacity and reduce its dependency on imported refined products, was impeded by undisclosed factors.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the project was taken away from the State during the administration of Amosun, while Abiodun was said to be the Chairman of the committee on the project set up by the state government.
The project was proposed to be sited in Ogunwaterside and was expected to create numerous jobs and enhance Nigeria’s energy security, making its collapse a matter of national concern.
In its statement, signed by the Executive Director, Buna Isiak and obtained by PLATFORM TIMES, HURMA expressed grave concern over the alleged sabotage, calling it an “act of economic sabotage” by certain prominent personalities in Ogun State.
The NGO emphasized the importance of a thorough and transparent investigation by the National Assembly to uncover the truth behind the project’s disruption and to hold accountable those responsible for any wrongdoing.
“The Olokola Dangote Refinery Project was a significant investment aimed at advancing Nigeria’s industrial capabilities and ensuring energy self-sufficiency,” HURMA stated.
“The allegations that such a critical initiative was thwarted by economic sabotage are deeply troubling and warrant immediate and comprehensive investigation.”
The organization urged the National Assembly to summon former Governor Ibikunle Amosun and current Governor Dapo Abiodun, along with other individuals who may have been involved, to provide explanations for the project’s derailment.
HURMA stressed that the public deserves clarity on why such a vital project was frustrated, especially given the potential economic benefits it promised.
PLATFORM TIMES, which sighted the acknowledged copies of the letters addressed to both the Senate President, Senator Godswil Akpabio, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass, could not get a commitment from the NASS on the request by the body as of the time of filing this report.
