The Yobe State Commissioner of Police, CP Garba Ahmed, has sounded a warning over potential security threats during the planned hardship protests scheduled for August 1st.

Ahmed said according to intelligence reports, insurgent groups are plotting to exploit the demonstrations to carry out heinous activities in the state.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, CP Ahmed stressed the precarious security situation in Yobe, particularly highlighting recent insurgent activities in Gujba Local Government Area and the detonation of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

The CP expressed concerns over foreign mercenaries’ potential involvement in the protests, raising the alarm over the motives behind the planned actions.

“We note concerns about foreign mercenaries’ involvement in the planned protest.

“ We commend patriots who have withdrawn from protests due to sinister motives and ignorance of those calling for violence,” the statement read.

The police chief urged Yobe citizens to exercise caution and reconsider participating in the protests, noting that even peaceful demonstrations might be ill-timed given the current security context.

CP Ahmed also warned clandestine groups and hoodlums planning to destabilize the state to desist from their criminal intentions.

He  said to ensure the safety and orderliness of the planned protests,  the organisers  must  provide comprehensive details, including proposed routes, assembly points, expected duration, and the contact information of leaders and organisers..

He added that this information  is crucial for the police to deploy adequate personnel and resources, establish clear communication channels, and prevent potential violence or criminal activities.

“We encourage protesters to cooperate with the police, obey the law, and adhere to global best practices for peaceful assembly.

“We are committed to working with all to promote peaceful expression and maintain public order,” CP Ahmed stated.

The police commissioner also commended the residents of Yobe for their cooperation in maintaining law and order and urged continued support for security agencies in their efforts to restore peace and stability in the state
