A team of pro bono lawyers has successfully secured the release of 12 protesters detained by the Lagos State Police Command.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that these protesters were arrested at the Lekki Toll Gate and other parts of Lagos while exercising their constitutional right to peaceful protest.
The legal team, operating under the auspices of Lawyers for the Rule of Law and Human Rights, has been providing free legal services to participants in the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria movement.
Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, a prominent member of this team, announced the release on Friday evening through his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Effiong provided the names of the released protesters, which include: Labe Benedict, Nura Umar, Yaro Gazama, Joseph Jeremiah, Osinachi Udoeze, Ayodele Ajayi, Godwin Moloku, Adelokun Wasiu, Precious Alfred, Yahaya Mohammed, Otika Victor, and Ndukwe Ogbonnaya.
The released individuals were held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti.
Effiong revealed that most of the protesters were initially apprehended by thugs at the Lekki Toll Gate, who then handed them over to the police.
In a statement detailing the release, Effiong said, “Our team of pro bono lawyers under the auspices of Lawyers For Rule Of Law And Human Rights have just secured the release of 12 protesters who were arrested by the police at the Lekki Toll Gate and other parts of Lagos.
“We met with the Commissioner of Police earlier today at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park and complained about the ongoing arbitrary arrest of protesters in Lagos.
The CP then directed us to Panti where the protesters were detained and instructed the DCP, Panti to release them. The protesters were accordingly released to me and my colleagues.”
Effiong noted that while this is a positive development, efforts are ongoing to secure the release of other protesters detained in various states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. He emphasized, “History will vindicate the just.”
The #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests have seen widespread participation across the country, with citizens demanding better governance and accountability from their leaders.
The actions of the Lawyers for the Rule of Law and Human Rights have provided crucial support to those facing legal challenges as a result of their involvement in these protests.
