Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has approved the removal of John Chem, the chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC).
The decision follows accusations from the state house of assembly regarding Chem’s alleged poor judgement in his role.
On Wednesday, the Benue state house of assembly leveled serious allegations against Chem, asserting that his tenure was marred by decisions that failed to meet public interest and stakeholder expectations.
The assembly’s resolution called for his immediate removal from office.
In a statement released on Thursday, Tersoo Kula, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Alia, confirmed the governor’s action.
“Governor Alia is in receipt of a communication from the Benue state house of assembly wherein the honourable members sent some resolutions to him for further implementation,” Kula said.
Kula elaborated on the nature of the assembly’s concerns, stating, “These resolutions include, amongst others, that the chairman of the Commission, Dr. John Chem, should be removed from office.
The assembly accused the BSIEC chairman of lacking good judgement as to which decision will appeal to the greater majority of all stakeholders and that his actions so far in office fall short of the public interest.”
In compliance with the assembly’s resolutions, Governor Alia has directed Dr. Chem to hand over his responsibilities to the administrative secretary of the commission immediately.
