The 19 northern governors of Nigeria, led by Governor Caleb Muftwang of Plateau State, are set to commence urgent discussions on the region’s burgeoning birth rate, which Muftwang has described as a “time bomb.”
The governor sounded the alarm on the severe lack of infrastructure for human capital development, which he warned could exacerbate banditry and terrorism in the region.
Speaking on a Television’s programme on Tuesday, Muftwang criticised the northern elite for their neglect of the local youth.
He highlighted the disparity between the elite, who send their children to prestigious schools both locally and internationally, and the vulnerable young population left behind, susceptible to criminal indoctrination.
“We don’t have an option. At this point, we must take the bull by the horns,” Muftwang declared, emphasizing the urgent need for collective action.
The governor called for a multifaceted approach to the issue, stressing the importance of parental responsibility.
“Parents must take responsibility for the children they bring into the world,” he said.
Muftwang also stressed the crucial role of religious leaders in addressing these challenges, warning against the misuse of religion.
“We must ensure that religion does not become a setback to society,” he stated, advocating for a united effort to curtail the region’s excessive birth rate and its potential consequences.
