Former Ogun State Governor and Senator, Ibikunle Amosun, has expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing a Governing Council for the newly established Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

In a statement released on Friday, Amosun described the appointment of Usman Mohammed Shanawa as the head of the Governing Council as a significant milestone, fulfilling the longstanding aspirations of stakeholders in Ogun Central Senatorial District.

He highlighted the importance of the university to the region, noting that its establishment was a key desire during his tenure as governor from 2011 to 2019.

“I use this medium to sincerely thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for this definitive and conclusive step of appointing a Governing Council to steer the affairs of the new university,” Amosun stated.

He emphasized that the move marks the beginning of a new chapter for the institution, which he said  is poised to play a crucial role in the advancement of medical education and healthcare in Nigeria.

Amosun also extended his appreciation to the immediate past President, Muhammadu Buhari, for assenting to the bill that established the university, and commended the 9th National Assembly for their dedication to the project.

He specifically acknowledged the efforts of Senator Ahmad Lawan, former President of the Senate, and Femi Gbajabiamila, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, for their roles in making the university a reality.

In addition, Amosun recognized the support of Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, the former Minister of Finance, whose contributions were pivotal in the establishment of the university.

He also congratulated the stakeholders and leaders from Ogun State, particularly the traditional rulers, including the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, for their unwavering support in achieving this educational milestone.

Amosun reaffirmed  his commitment to the development of Ogun State and expressed his satisfaction with the progress made towards realizing the vision of the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences.
