The Nigeria Police Force has called for greater public understanding of the challenges faced by law enforcement in combating terrorism and other crimes across the country.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, stated that while the police are committed to apprehending criminals, it is unrealistic to expect all terrorists to be arrested simultaneously.
In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Adejobi urged Nigerians to recognize the efforts made by the police in securing arrests, despite the daunting scale of the task.
“We can’t apprehend all the criminals at once. At least, appreciate us for the ones we have arrested. We arrest them on a daily basis, in large numbers,” Adejobi stated.
His comments were in response to images posted by an X user, @ZagazOlaMakama, which depicted suspected terrorists flaunting bundles of naira notes, believed to be proceeds from kidnapping activities.
The caption accompanying the photos read, “They are now posing with the ransom money. Showing that they are balling.”
Adejobi’s remarks come amid growing public criticism of the police’s perceived ineffectiveness in tackling high-profile criminal activities, particularly terrorism.
The police have often been accused of disproportionately focusing their efforts on arresting peaceful protesters, sometimes tracking them to their homes, while appearing less effective in dealing with heavily armed criminals who openly flaunt their activities on social media.
Addressing these concerns, Adejobi reiterated the commitment of the police and other security forces to ensuring that no criminal goes unpunished.
He stressed the importance of collective efforts and active citizen involvement in tackling insecurity and other societal vices in Nigeria.
“The armed forces and the police are trying their best. Efforts of security forces should be seen, noticed, and appreciated.
“ We need to look towards having the collective efforts and individualistic involvement in tackling insecurity and other vices in Nigeria,” he noted.
