Two out of 14 villagers abducted by bandits in the Gefe community of Kajuru Local Government Area, Kaduna State, have managed to escape after their captors dozed off in their forest hideout.

A community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, confirmed the incident .

According to the source, the bandits, under the influence of alcohol and Indian hemp, fell asleep, providing the opportunity for two of the victims to untie themselves and flee.

“It was around 9:12 am when a chief from a neighbouring village contacted me, informing me that two people who had escaped from the bandits’ den were with him,” the source revealed.

Upon receiving the information, the community leader swiftly mobilized local vigilantes to the neighbouring village to identify the escapees and ensure their safe return.

“Even as I speak to you, the victims are at the hospital, reunited with their families,” he added.

In a related development, troops in the area arrested a charcoal dealer in the nearby Kurmin-Kare community.

The suspect was allegedly transporting drugs, wine, cartons of energy drinks, and Indian hemp to the bandits in their hideout.

The items were found concealed in a pickup truck supposedly meant for loading charcoal from the forest.

Attempts to reach the spokesperson for the Kaduna State Police Command, ASP Hassan Mansur, for comments on the incident were unsuccessful.

The Gefe community and its neighboring areas have been under siege by bandits, leading to heightened fears and insecurity among residents.
