As the local government elections approach, the Ogun State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has taken significant strides to ensure internal unity and solidify its position against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The party said it has successfully reconciled aggrieved members and drawn up a comprehensive timetable for its congresses at various levels.
The local government poll has been skated for November this year .
The Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee in Ogun State, Hon. Dada Awoleye, made these announcements during a crucial stakeholders meeting held at the party’s secretariat in Abeokuta.
Awoleye emphasized that the reconciliation of all discontented factions within the party was essential to fostering a unified front capable of challenging the APC’s dominance at the grassroots level.
“The caretaker committee of the PDP in Ogun State decided to call this stakeholders meeting to engage with all members and assess the state of the party,” Awoleye stated.
“From our discussions today, we found that the issues at hand were not insurmountable.
“ Some members felt excluded from the registration process, but following directives from the national body of our party, we have rectified this by ensuring that periodic registration is conducted as per our constitution.”
The forthcoming congresses, which are scheduled to begin on August 31, 2024, at the ward level, followed by the local government and state congresses on September 7 and 14 respectively, are anticipated to usher in a new cadre of leadership across the party’s structures in Ogun State.
Awoleye assured that the process would proceed smoothly, having secured the approval of the PDP’s national secretariat.
“Our duty is to ensure that the PDP, being a large and diverse family, remains united,” Awoleye continued.
“We are pleased that members have committed to working together for the party’s progress. This unity is crucial, especially as we approach what we believe will be a test case for our party’s strength at the local government level.
“If the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) conducts a free and fair election, I am confident that the PDP will emerge victorious in numerous local governments and wards.”
The Secretary of the Caretaker Committee, Barr. Paul Ogunnubi, reiterated the party’s commitment to the congresses and released the timetable for the upcoming elections, while also noting that the dates were subject to any potential changes.
Amid the preparations, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu, a member of the PDP’s Board of Trustees, called for sustained unity within the party.
He cautioned against actions that could lead to internal conflicts or legal battles, urging members to focus on inclusivity and cohesion.
“Therefore, I beg us all, we must remain united,” Adebutu appealed.
“Let’s ensure that we put round pegs in round holes and avoid situations that could force us back into litigation.
“The success of these congresses is crucial for our collective goal of reclaiming power.”
