Amid rising concerns over the safety of its forest reserves, the Ogun State government has issued a stern warning to herdsmen encroaching on forested areas, cautioning against the use of dangerous weapons and calling for immediate cessation of such activities.
The government has also called for strengthened cooperation among investors, farmers, and other stakeholders to maintain peace and ensure the protection of investments within these reserves.
The Commissioner for Forestry, Engr. Taiwo Oludotun, made this clear during a critical peace meeting with stakeholders from Ilaro.
Oludotun, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Timothy Olatunji, emphasized that the state government is committed to safeguarding the interests and investments of all stakeholders, asserting that any threat to these interests would not be tolerated.
In a strong rebuke of the current situation, Oludotun expressed the government’s deep concern over the reported influx of herdsmen into the Ilaro Forest Reserve, particularly their alarming use of dangerous weapons, including AK-47 rifles.
He highlighted the stark contrast between the traditional image of herdsmen, who were once known to carry spears and sticks, and the current reality where they are now armed as if preparing for warfare.
“Government will no longer fold its arms and watch herdsmen threaten law-abiding citizens with dangerous weapons and AK-47 rifles in and around the forest,” Oludotun stataed.
The meeting also saw contributions from the Special Assistant to the Governor on Inter-Ethnic Affairs, Alhaji Hadi Sani, who reassured investors that the state government is fully committed to deploying all necessary measures to protect their investments.
He emphasized that peace and mutual cooperation among all parties are crucial for the continued development of the forest reserves.
Prince Bayo Kuyeri, representing Domedayo Farms, a key investor in the region, expressed gratitude to the government for its proactive stance in securing their investments.
He urged fellow farmers to cooperate with investors to foster a peaceful and progressive environment within the reserves.
In response to the government’s warnings, Alhaji Musa Adams, Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association for Ado-Odo/Ota, Ipokia, and Yewa Local Governments, pledged to ensure that his members comply with the government’s directives and maintain peace in the forest reserves.
