Caretaker coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Augustine Eguavoen has defended his decision to bring on Orlando Pirates’ Olisa Ndah to partner William Troost-Ekong in Saturday’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Benin Republic.

The Super Eagles won the AFCON qualifier 3-0, thanks to goals from Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen.

The match was played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo

However, during the encounter, Eguavoen had to bring in Ndah to replace Calvin Bassey after the hour mark.

Bassey, who plays for Fulham in the Premier League, was booked in the 39th minute.

Asked why he brought in Ndah to partner Troost-Ekong, Eguavoen said at his post-match press conference:

“Whoever comes in, there is an understanding. We have been training for one week.

“Ndah is not new, he was here for the AFCON in Cameroon so we have worked with him before now and there is that synergy.

“Whoever comes in, we want to give specific instructions, just go out and play.”
