AFCONQ 2025: Benin coach, Rohr names three players who helped Super Eagles won 3-0

Benin Republic coach, Gernot Rohr, has named three players who helped the Super Eagles defeat his team 3-0 in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Saturday.

Rohr’s side had defeated Nigeria in June during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers but were thrashed at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

Benin defended well against Nigeria for almost the entire first half, but their resilience was broken by a moment of individual brilliance from 2024 Ballon d’Or nominee, Ademola Lookman.

Substitute Victor Osimhen then added the second goal in the second half before Lookman made it three for Augustine Eguavoen’s men.

Speaking at his post-match interview, Rohr admitted that substitutes Osimhen, Moses Simon, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru played key roles in Nigeria’s victory over Benin.

The 71-year-old German said: “It is a hard result for us. We conceded the first goal in the first additional minute of the first half, and it was a bit of a shock for my team, I think. Then the Nigerian team could start the second half strong.

“This victory is without any doubt. When I see players coming in like Moses Simon, Osimhen, and Dele-Bashiru, the bench you have here in Nigeria is fantastic, and we don’t have that. But my young team is learning, and we showed that against the Super Eagles in June. We are full of potential, and we must learn from the mistakes we made today.”

Benin will face Libya on Tuesday in their second group game, while Nigeria will clash with Rwanda.
