The Chairman of Abeokuta North Local Government, Hon. Lanre Oyegbola, has flagged off a Skills and Enterprise Development Centre aimed at equipping no fewer than 200 youths with practical vocational and entrepreneurial training.
The inauguration ceremony, held on Tuesday at the council secretariat in Akomoje, marked what the chairman described as “a new dawn” for the local government in its quest to tackle youth unemployment and stimulate economic growth through empowerment.
Oyegbola, while commissioning the state-of-the-art facility, said the initiative underscores his administration’s commitment to human capital development and grassroots transformation.
“This centre is more than just a building. It is a beacon of hope and a catalyst for sustainable growth.
“We are investing in people, particularly our youth, because they hold the key to the future of Abeokuta North,” he said.
He urged the selected beneficiaries to take full advantage of the opportunity, stressing that hard work, innovation, and resilience were critical to personal and societal advancement.
According to the council boss, the training centre is designed to provide hands-on skills in vocational and digital trades, while also connecting participants to mentorship and resources that can support business development and job creation.
“Today, we are not just launching a project; we are launching dreams and possibilities,” he added.
“This is a strategic move to empower our young people and reduce over-dependence on white-collar jobs.”
The event drew attendance from traditional leaders, community stakeholders, youth organisations, development partners, and technical trainers who will facilitate the programme.
Some of the skills to be offered include tailoring, ICT, hairdressing, catering, shoemaking, and other demand-driven trades.
Oyegbola reaffirmed the council’s resolve to continue rolling out people-oriented projects and policies that uplift lives and strengthen the socio-economic fabric of the local government.
“This is just the beginning,” he assured. “We will not relent until Abeokuta North becomes a model for youth empowerment and community development in Ogun State.”
