Abiodun Hands Over Amosun’s Model School For New Federal University In Abeokuta

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has donated a model college building constructed by the immediate-past administration of Senator Ibikunle Amosun at Onijaganjagan, near Abeokuta, for the take-off of the newly approved Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences (FUMMSA), Abeokuta.

Governor Abiodun made the announcement on Saturday during the commissioning of several capital projects at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta.

He disclosed that the decision followed a request from the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, who drew his attention to the infrastructural challenges hampering the commencement of academic activities at the new institution.

“The funding provided for the take-off of this prestigious university would barely be enough to fence the allocated land,” Abiodun said.

“After due consultations, we resolved to donate the state’s model college at Onijaganjagan to serve as the temporary site for the take-off of this University of Medical Sciences.”

He noted that this marks the second time his administration is donating facilities to support the federal government’s health-related projects, reinforcing the state’s commitment to collaborative governance.

Abiodun emphasized that his administration views healthcare as a fundamental human right and remains committed to strengthening primary and secondary health infrastructure across the state.

He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration’s investment in health reform, including the expansion of the National Health Insurance Authority and provision of essential medical equipment to public health institutions.

The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako, in his remarks, commended the state’s gesture, describing it as a boost to the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda in the health sector.

He said the newly commissioned projects at FMC, including an Oxygen Plant and several ward buildings, are part of efforts to upgrade infrastructure in federal tertiary health institutions across the country.

Former Ogun State Governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, also present at the event, expressed satisfaction at the progress FMC Abeokuta has made since he transferred ownership to the federal government three decades ago, a decision he said was met with criticism at the time.

“I was vilified for that decision, but today, I am vindicated,” Osoba stated.

Outgoing Chief Medical Director, Prof. Adewale Musa-Olomu, highlighted the achievements recorded during his eight-year tenure, including significant physical expansion and staff welfare.

He revealed that FMC Abeokuta handled 40 percent of all open-heart surgeries performed in Nigeria during the period.

He added that the facility is set to host the take-off of the newly approved FUMMSA in September, marking a major milestone in the state’s medical education and healthcare delivery.

The donated model college is one of several initiated by former Governor Amosun under a plan to establish modern schools across the state.

While many of the structures did not take off during his administration, some have since been repurposed by the Abiodun-led government, including the conversion of another facility in Kobape into a tech hub.
