Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, paid tribute to the late Major-General Ekundayo Opaleye (Rtd.), hailing him as a patriot who embodied courage, integrity, leadership, and unwavering commitment to both the Nigerian Army and the nation.
Speaking at Opaleye’s burial ceremony at the Green Legacy Resorts Hall, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Governor Abiodun acknowledged the significant void left by the departed elder statesman in both his immediate family and the state.
Represented by Deputy Governor Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Abiodun highlighted Opaleye’s distinguished roles during his active service in the Nigerian Army.
According to him, he served as the Military Administrator of old Ondo State, Corps Commander of the Nigerian Engineers, Commander of the Organisation of African Union’s neutral military observer Corps in Rwanda, and contributing to the country’s peace agreement.
Governor Abiodun also commended Opaleye’s post-retirement impact, noting his pivotal role in Owu Kingdom as Balogun and as a cabinet member of the Olowu in Council.
He expressed gratitude for Opaleye’s ongoing support to his administration, providing valuable counsel.
The Governor extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of the government and the people of the state to Opaleye’s widows, children, grandchildren, and the extended family.
He prayed for God’s fortitude to bear the irreparable loss and eternal rest for the departed.
In additional remarks, Ondo State Deputy Governor Dr. Olayide Adelami praised Opaleye for introducing due process during his tenure as military administrator in Ondo State, a legacy that the state continues to follow.
Adelami described Opaleye as a committed Christian, father, and diligent leader, urging others to emulate his example.
During the funeral service, Most Superior Evangelist Olusegun Olarinde highlighted Opaleye’s humility, fear of God, and contributions to the church’s development.
He emphasized the inevitability of death, urging people to be diligent and extend a hand of fellowship to others.
The only daughter of the deceased, Navy Cdr. Abiola Oluwole-Smith, shared poignant memories of her father, portraying him as a loving, caring, disciplined, and passionate family man.
She described Opaleye as a rare gem embodying genuine love, honesty, humility, and expressed the profound loss his absence brings.
