Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has urged Nigerians to prioritize national unity and peace as a way to honor the sacrifices of the country’s fallen heroes.
Speaking at a special church service to mark the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, held at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter, Ake, Abeokuta, the governor emphasized that the legacies of the nation’s armed forces must inspire a collective commitment to building a better Nigeria.
Abiodun noted that beyond ceremonies, Nigerians must actively work towards fostering unity and silencing divisions.
“Let us build a Nigeria where unity prevails over division, where peace silences the echoes of conflict, and where the sacrifices of our heroes inspire us to serve one another selflessly,” he stated.
Highlighting the importance of supporting the families of fallen soldiers, the governor stressed that their welfare should not rest solely on the Nigeria Legion.
He described this responsibility as a moral duty that every Nigerian must share.
“The sacrifices of our heroes must remain enshrined in our national consciousness. While the Legion has made commendable efforts in caring for the families of our fallen heroes, this duty must be seen as a collective obligation.It is a debt we owe in honor of those who gave their all for our nation,” he said.
Abiodun pledged his administration’s continued support for the economic welfare of Ogun State residents and law enforcement agencies, emphasizing the need to address current security and economic challenges.
The governor described the Armed Forces Remembrance Day as a sacred moment for Nigerians to reflect on the courage and resilience of military personnel who defended the nation’s unity.
“Their blood, sweat, and tears have sown the seeds of hope, peace, and national pride. We must not forget the families they left behind—the unsung heroes who endure the pain of loss with unyielding grace,” Abiodun said.
In his sermon, Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Akinrodoye, Bishop of the Egba Diocese of the African Church, called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in prayer for the country’s peace and the families of fallen heroes.
He urged the government to adequately equip security agencies to combat the nation’s security challenges effectively.
“It is imperative that we show appreciation to God despite our challenges as a nation. We must also extend love and fellowship to the families of our fallen heroes and to the security personnel who work tirelessly to protect our lives and property,” Akinrodoye said.
The service featured prayers for the peace of the nation, Ogun State, and the families of departed soldiers.
