    ABU to establish leadership centre for quality national leaders

    Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria is to establish a leadership centre for mentoring and breeding quality future leaders in the country.

    Prof. Adamu Ahmed, Vice Chancellor of the university, disclosed this at a Youth Leadership Development Conference for some select students held at the institution.

    The conference jointly organised by the Institute of Education, ABU, and Aderonke Foundation, was aimed at harnessing leadership potentials in youth with a view to mentoring and promoting quality in their future aspiration as leaders.

    The vice chancellor explained that the university would collaboration with the foundation in establishing the centre as designed by the foundation.

    He noted that most Nigerian universities lacked a structured programme for training future leaders, focusing mainly on certificate awards.

    Prof. Ahmed, therefore, stated that the opportunity provided by the foundation will be critically examine and put to course to enable the university to roll out a centre for leadership training.

    While applauding both the institute and the foundation, the vice chancellor also appreciated the selection of 20 students, and the university, for the training programme.

    In a paper presentation titled “An introduction to good leadership”, the US-based founder and Chief Executive Officer, Aderonke Foundation, Dr Aderonke Kujore, defined leadership as the process of deciding on a goal and bringing people together to work as a team towards a shared goal.

    Dr Aderonke identified positive decision making, bringing people together, empathy and team work as good qualities a leader should possess.

    While expressing delight for choosing the university to hold the conference, she said the collaboration was not by chance, but rather a paramount decision that had yielded the desired result.

    She thanked the management for their unwavering support towards the success of the conference.

    In another presentation titled “A Good Leader Self Awareness, Testing and Recognition, Leadership Presence (Body Language, Publicity)”, the Head, Research, Statistics and Documentation, Institute of Education, Dr Hadiza Nass, defined self-awareness as the ability to know that every action a leader takes has consequences.

    Earlier in his address, the Director, Institute of Education, ABU, Prof. Abubakar Muhammad Jumare, described the conference as an avenue where future leaders came together to rub minds and brainstorm on important leadership qualities.

    Prof Jumare encouraged participants to make good utilization of the knowledge acquired for the betterment of the future generation.
