Abuja Transport System a National Embarrassment – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has described the current state of the public transportation system in Abuja as a “national embarrassment.”

Wike made the remark during an inspection tour of modern bus terminals under construction, ahead of their planned commissioning to commemorate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second year in office.

The minister decried the chaotic state of public transportation in the capital city, stating that it falls far below the standard expected of a nation’s capital.

According to him, the absence of a structured and efficient transit system has become a source of shame for the country.

“It’s unfortunate for a country like this — a Federal Capital Territory — that we cannot boast of a proper transportation system.

Every time we travel out of the country, we see how it’s done elsewhere. We should be able to replicate that,” Wike said.

He vowed to initiate sweeping reforms aimed at overhauling the transport architecture in Abuja.

According to the minister, the goal is to deliver a modern, secure, and efficient system that reflects the dignity of a functional capital city.

Wike added, “We must create a system where movement is safe, predictable, and dignified. That is what we owe the residents and the country at large.”

While commending local contractors handling the terminal projects, Wike emphasized the need for improved quality of work.

He noted visible improvements since his last visit but maintained that the standard must be raised even higher before the official commissioning.

“I am very happy with what I’ve seen,” he told journalists during the inspection. “But when you see some errors, you have to point them out. That doesn’t mean you’re not satisfied.

The last time we came here, I expressed my dismay. This time, I can say there’s clear improvement, and by the time we return for commissioning, it will be something else entirely.”
