Access Bank has expressed deep concern over the recent data released by the World Health Organisation (WHO), revealing a distressing statistic of 1,047 maternal and infant deaths per 100,000 births in Nigeria.
Dare Adetosoye, the Head of South-West II Zonal Operations for Access Bank, emphasized the urgency of concerted efforts to rectify this concerning trend within the healthcare delivery sector.
Speaking at the official handover ceremony of a renovated and well-equipped basic health centre in Ago Aduloju Farmstead, Ado Ekiti, Adetosoye highlighted that a significant percentage of these deaths occurred in areas where basic health services were either unavailable or inadequate.
He underscored Access Bank’s commitment to intervening in such critical situations, aiming to enhance the quality of life for citizens.
Adetosoye urged other corporate entities to follow suit, stating, “We came here because of the alarming statistics of the WHO that 1,047 out of 100,000 births in Nigeria lead to deaths, and this is because healthcare is not available, especially at the primary level, which is the basic place where healthcare should be.”
Access Bank’s intervention aligns with the theme of their retail operations’ Corporate Social Responsibility for the year, focusing on ‘Nurturing Love for Babies and Mothers.’
The bank chose six locations nationwide, with Ago Aduloju, Ado Ekiti, selected for the South-West II Zonal Operations.
The renovated health centre now boasts essential facilities, including an ambulance stretcher for emergencies, two new delivery beds, a double suction machine for childbirth care, a wheelchair for patients requiring assistance, and a sterilizer.
The bank also undertook comprehensive renovations, addressing structural issues such as ceiling and window replacements.
Access Bank further ensured a clean and functional environment by repairing and painting the entire facility and providing a sustainable potable water supply.
Dr. Oyebanji Filani, the Ekiti State Commissioner for Health, expressed gratitude to Access Bank for its philanthropic gesture, acknowledging that the bank’s intervention has alleviated a significant burden on the state government.
Represented by Dr. Olusola Gbenga-Igotun, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Filani encouraged the local community to make good use of the improved healthcare facility, emphasizing the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing healthcare delivery for the people’s well-being.
