Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Debbie Shokoya, has opened up on why she converted from Christianity to Islam following her marriage, stressing that her decision was deeply personal and rooted in her relationship with God.
Shokoya, who was born and raised in a Christian family, revealed on Saturday through her Instagram page that her transition to Islam was not influenced by societal pressure but by her conviction and the need for spiritual peace.
She wrote: “Christianity by birth, Muslim by marriage over here… God is love! Humanity always. I have never been a discriminator of any religion. My relationship with God is what matters most and how I treat my fellow human.”
The actress emphasized that religion should not be seen as a source of competition or conflict, but as a way of life anchored on love, peace, and compassion. According to her, true worship is reflected in how people treat one another, irrespective of tribe, colour, or faith.
Shokoya added that she does not believe in debating religious superiority, noting that what matters most is “preaching love and acting in love first.”
Her post has since generated reactions from fans, with many commending her for prioritizing humanity above religious differences.
Shokoya joins a growing list of Nigerian celebrities who have switched faiths, sparking conversations about interfaith marriages and the personal choices of public figures.
