The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused key officials within the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of orchestrating clandestine moves aimed at destabilising the newly formed opposition coalition and sowing confusion within its ranks.
In a statement issued on Monday, the ADC’s Interim National Publicity Secretary and National Coalition Spokesperson, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, alleged that top Federal Government officials have summoned former state chairmen and executive committee members of the party from the North-East and North-West to secret meetings.
According to Abdullahi, the real objective of the meetings is not related to national security or peacebuilding, but to intimidate and co-opt the party leaders into schemes designed to fracture the opposition bloc and delegitimise the current leadership of the ADC.
“We have credible intelligence that the aim of this meeting is not for national security or peacebuilding. It is to intimidate, coerce, and, if possible, co-opt these individuals into a fabricated scheme against the opposition coalition. This is not politics. This is sabotage,” the statement read.
He said the alleged interference is a calculated effort to derail the momentum gained by the ADC and other parties in the wake of the July 1 Coalition Declaration and the July 2 unveiling of the ADC as a central opposition force in Nigeria.
“The July 1st Coalition Declaration and the July 2nd unveiling of the ADC have clearly rattled the ruling party,” the ADC noted. “It is now obvious that the Tinubu administration—having lost the trust of the Nigerian people—cannot withstand the pressure of a united and credible opposition.”
The party warned that the sustained effort to manipulate and intimidate its members is reminiscent of tactics used to enforce one-party rule, which it described as a grave threat to Nigeria’s democratic future.
“This surreptitious dalliance with ADC state chairpersons by appointees of the federal government who should be focused on the pressing national security challenges the country is facing is a coordinated assault on multiparty democracy. This is how one-party states are born—through intimidation,” the party warned.
The ADC, which has recently repositioned itself as a unifying force for Nigerians disillusioned by current governance, said it would resist all attempts to stifle its operations and silence opposition voices.
“This party belongs to every Nigerian who is tired of the lies, the manipulation, and the hardship,” the statement read. “We would therefore not allow a handful of desperate men to turn Nigeria into a one-party dictatorship. And it would be our patriotic duty to resist it with every democratic means available to us.”
The party also challenged President Tinubu to take decisive action to halt the alleged anti-democratic actions of some of his appointees.
“We call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take note of these sinister moves by some of his appointees and call them to order. The president needs to prove to Nigerians that he is indeed a democrat,” Abdullahi said.
“He needs to remind his men that if the Goodluck Jonathan administration were as intolerant and as subversive of the opposition, the APC would not have come to power in 2015 and he would not have been a president today.”
The ADC has been at the forefront of building a national coalition of opposition voices ahead of the 2027 elections, positioning itself as a credible alternative to the current administration.
