The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the spate of killings and kidnappings in Katsina and Zamfara states, accusing President Bola Tinubu of neglecting urgent security crises while embarking on frequent foreign trips.
The opposition party’s reaction followed the massacre of over 30 worshippers at a mosque in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina, and recent reports that more than 140 lives have been lost in both states within two months.
In a statement on Sunday signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described the worsening insecurity in the North-West as evidence of a “collapsed national security architecture.”
“The carnage in Katsina and Zamfara is a damning proof of the failure of Nigeria’s security system,” the party said.
“It is disheartening that instead of confronting these national tragedies with the urgency they demand, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu continues to jet around the world chasing photo opportunities while Nigerians are slaughtered at home.”
The party faulted Tinubu for failing to address the nation or directly console families of the victims, insisting that “diplomacy abroad is meaningless if safety and security at home cannot be guaranteed.”
The ADC further berated governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for holding a political meeting in Zamfara shortly after the killings, describing the move as “insensitive and disrespectful to grieving families.”
The party urged the Federal Government to immediately declare a state of emergency in Katsina and Zamfara, while reviewing the nation’s entire security framework.
It also referenced the Chief of Defence Staff’s recent advice to citizens to acquire self-defence skills, noting that the statement was “perhaps the most honest admission yet that Nigeria’s internal defence system is broken and urgently needs restructuring.”
The killings in the North-West have continued to heighten concerns over Nigeria’s ability to curb banditry, with residents lamenting that security forces appear overwhelmed by the scale of attacks.
