The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has attributed the persistent corruption in Nigeria to the failure of Christians to live up to their calling as “peculiar people.”
He made this assertion during the sixth day of the church’s annual convention, themed ‘Heaven,’ held at the Redemption City in Mowe, Ogun State.
Addressing thousands of worshippers, Adeboye lamented that corruption has reached alarming levels in Nigeria because many Christians, who should stand out as moral exemplars, have compromised their values.
He emphasized that if Christians steadfastly refused to engage in corrupt practices, even in the face of pressure or adversity, corruption could be significantly reduced, if not eradicated.
“We talk about corruption in Nigeria. Why do you think corruption has become so deep?
“ It is because we Christians, who are supposed to be peculiar people, are not making any difference. It’s so difficult to even know who is who,” Adeboye said.
He further stressed that Christians must embody purity and integrity, living in a way that clearly distinguishes them as followers of God.
The revered cleric recounted two troubling instances of corruption involving members of his congregation.
In the first, a female church member was awarded a road construction contract worth N3 million but was instructed to inflate the cost to N33 million.
She refused, stating, “I am a child of God. How will I spend the money?”
Her refusal to compromise stunned the officials, who regarded her with disbelief.
In another case, a different female member was awarded a contract to tar a road, only to discover that the road had already been completed.
When she reported the mistake, she was told to collect the payment and share the proceeds.
The woman, however, chose to walk away from the deal rather than participate in the fraudulent scheme.
Adeboye urged Christians to reject any form of corruption and to maintain their integrity, even when it results in personal loss or ridicule.
He warned that the world might hate those who adhere to godly standards, but that such standards are essential for living a life pleasing to God.
“People must be able to see you at a distance and know that this is a candidate for heaven. In your behaviour, character, you must be different. If you want to compromise because of promotion, let them take their promotion because you are a peculiar person,” he concluded.
