The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has raised concerns over the unequal compensation given to coaches of the Super Falcons compared to players, following the team’s victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Speaking during the RCCG’s monthly Thanksgiving Service on Sunday at the church’s national headquarters in Ebute-Meta, Lagos, the respected cleric commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for honouring the Super Falcons for clinching their 10th WAFCON title in Morocco.
President Tinubu had recently rewarded each of the 24 players with the naira equivalent of $100,000 and a three-bedroom apartment. In contrast, the coaching crew, including head coach Justin Madugu, was given the naira equivalent of $50,000.
While applauding the gesture, Pastor Adeboye questioned the rationale behind giving coaches less, insisting that their technical input is pivotal to the team’s success.
“I thank the President for the gifts to the Falcons. However, I’m not quite sure I agree that the coaches should get less than the players because without coaches, the team will not succeed,” Adeboye stated during his sermon titled ‘The Winning Team’.
He likened the role of a coach to spiritual leadership, stressing that players rely on coaches for tactical direction and development.
Drawing from personal experience, the octogenarian recounted his time as a boxer in 1960 and how his coach’s intense training methods shaped him.
“We thought we were being trained for war, but today I thank my coach. A good coach sees your potential and pushes you to become better,” he added.
The Super Falcons, captained by Rasheedat Ajibade, defeated host nation Morocco to secure Nigeria’s 10th continental title on July 26 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
The team’s historic feat was celebrated nationwide, culminating in a presidential reception where the players and officials were honoured.
