In a move to set the record straight and douse rising speculations, High Chief Adio Rasheed Abiola, the Baale of Adio Ajegunle Asipa, Ogun State, has debunked the widespread belief that the community is named “Soyoye,” insisting that the original name remains Asipa Adio Ajegunle.
Speaking during a press conference held on Sunday, the traditional leader clarified the historical origin of the name “Soyoye” and addressed the recent false rumour circulating about his death.
Baale Abiola explained that the name “Soyoye” is a mistaken label tied to a business presence in the area rather than its heritage.
He disclosed that the name originated from Alhaji Rasaq Soyoye, a prominent livestock farmer who established a feed mill company along the road leading to the community.
“Alhaji Rasaq was a close friend of my late father, High Chief Abdulfatai Adio, the then Baale of Adio Ajegunle. He sited his feed mill by the roadside, and over time, people began to refer to the entire area as Soyoye,” he recounted.
He said the naming confusion worsened because visitors, particularly commercial transport operators, often stopped near the feed mill to drop passengers headed to the community.
“Before then, people coming to our community would drop at the roundabout and walk down. But after Alhaji Rasaq’s company sprang up, the area became more accessible and more widely referred to by the name of the company,” Baale Abiola said.
Despite the popularity of the Soyoye label, the Baale maintained that the traditional and official name of the community remains Asipa Adio Ajegunle.
“Let it be clear—till today, our community’s name remains Asipa Adio Ajegunle. That has not changed and will not change,” he declared.
The Baale noted that he decided to hold the press briefing after receiving a barrage of phone calls following false claims that the “Baale of Soyoye” had died. He dismissed the rumour as completely untrue and reassured the public of his good health.
“I am very much alive and in sound health. I thank those who reached out, but the rumour is unfounded and baseless,” he said.
The briefing was attended by residents, community leaders, and well-wishers, many of whom expressed appreciation for the timely clarification and urged media users to verify information before spreading it.
