In a heart-wrenching incident on Wednesday evening, a 43-year-old Nigerian sales representative, Mikail Osundiji, employed by a multinational manufacturing company, lost his life while engrossed in the semi-final showdown between Nigeria and South Africa in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Osundiji, a father of two from Osun State, reportedly suffered a fatal shock when the central referee disallowed Nigeria’s second goal against South Africa, scored by striker Victor Osimhen.

Witnesses at the Federal Housing Estate (FHE) football viewing center in Olomoore, Abeokuta, revealed that Osundiji, who showed no signs of illness earlier, suddenly gasped heavily, bowed his head, and collapsed on the ground.

His elder sister, Mrs. Adetunji Nofisat, recounted the tragic moment, stating that bystanders rushed Osundiji to a private hospital in Olomoore, where he was pronounced dead by the attending doctor.

The grieving family laid him to rest on Thursday afternoon, adhering to Islamic rites.

Nofisat, mourning the loss of her younger brother, appealed to the state governor,  Dapo Abiodun, for support, urging assistance, especially in the form of scholarships for Osundiji’s children, aged 12 and 7, to ensure they can complete their education up to the university level.
