Former Super Eagles captain, Sunday Oliseh, has issued a stern warning to Nigeria’s national football team ahead of their Round of 16 clash with Mozambique at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Speaking on his podcast, Oliseh stressed that the knockout stage represents a completely different challenge compared to the group phase. “We’re starting the Round of 16. What changes here now is that if you lose, you go home,” he said.
The Super Eagles were the only team to win all three of their group fixtures, scoring eight goals and conceding four under the guidance of head coach Eric Chelle.
Despite their dominant group stage performance, Oliseh emphasised that results, not style, will determine success in the elimination rounds.
“It is no longer important how beautifully you play; what matters is the result. That is why the Super Eagles must prioritise not conceding,” Oliseh added.
Nigeria will face Mozambique in a high-stakes encounter, with victory required to advance to the quarter-finals.
The former midfield maestro urged the team to combine discipline with tactical awareness to navigate the do-or-die match.
With expectations high and knockout pressure mounting, Oliseh’s message is clear: the Super Eagles must deliver when it matters most, or their AFCON 2025 campaign will end abruptly.
