A recent graduate of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, Oladipupo Opeyemi, has regained her freedom after spending nine harrowing days in the hands of kidnappers.
The release was confirmed on Friday night in a statement issued by Dr. Wasiu Tejuoso on behalf of the Olajide Oladipupo-Ogunmokun family and the Mass Communication Department of the institution.
“I am happy to announce that the kidnapped graduate of our department, Miss Opeyemi Oladipupo, was released last night after nine days in captivity,” the statement read.
Opeyemi, who graduated from the Mass Communication Department last year, was abducted on Wednesday night, sparking widespread concern among students, lecturers, and members of the public.
Her abductors reportedly demanded a ₦30 million ransom, prompting fundraising efforts and prayers from well-wishers both within and outside the institution.
Her father, Mr. Olajide Oladipupo Nathaniel, a carpenter, had earlier appealed for public assistance, explaining that he lacked the financial capacity to meet the kidnappers’ demands. Security agencies, including the Nigerian Army and the Department of State Services (DSS), were alerted and immediately began investigations.
Following her release, the family and the department expressed profound gratitude to individuals and groups that offered financial, moral, and spiritual support throughout the ordeal.
“On behalf of the parents and the department, I want to say a big thank you to everyone who supported us during this very dark moment,” the statement added, praying that such an incident never occurs again within the department or families involved.
While details surrounding her release remain unclear, it was gathered that the family initially paid ₦1.7 million, but the kidnappers claimed it was sent to the wrong account and later demanded an additional ₦15 million. Whether more money was eventually paid is yet to be confirmed.
Opeyemi’s safe return brings relief to the MAPOLY community and underscores the ongoing security challenges faced by students and graduates in the region.
