Governor Dapo Abiodun, the governor of Ogun State, paid a visit to the failed sections of the Benin-Sagamu road close to the tollgate on Monday, September 30th. He stated that the road, being a major route from Lagos through Ogun State to the South-East and the South-South parts of the country, has caused inconvenience to commuters due to its poor state.

This visit follows the publication of a special report by Platform Times highlighting the poor state of the road despite its allocation of funds in the Federal Government’s budget.

Governor Abiodun explained that the reconstruction of the road had been awarded by previous administrations. However, the contractors completed the project from the Benin end to the outskirts of Ijebu-Ode but could not finish it at the interchange before abandoning it due to a lack of funds.

He further explained that insufficient funding led to the road being left incomplete before reaching Ijebu-Ode, stopping short of the Sagamu Interchange. Recent challenges in accessibility were caused by a blocked drainage system meant to channel water from a nearby canal beneath the road.

Governor Abiodun has expressed concerns about the poor condition of the road and has engaged with the Minister of Works and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding its rehabilitation. He mentioned that the state government has identified the immediate issue causing the problem and is prepared to take action if the federal government does not act promptly.
