Babcock University, a private tertiary institution in Nigeria, has announced that its Management Information System has been hacked by suspected cybercriminals.
In a statement signed by the Director, Communication & Marketing of the institution, Dr. Joshua Suleiman, the criminals gained unauthorized access to some inconsequential records of the university’s clients, which they threatened to release if the university did not reach out to them.
They also stressed that the university’s sensitive information had been compromised.
In March, it was reported that the University Information Management System (UIMS) Account of the school was breached by hackers.
The Seventh Day Adventist school had been widely discussed on social media since March 21 due to an adult content that appeared on its website.
The school also acknowledged that the cyber threats have been difficult to eradicate.
In response, the university assured its clients and stakeholders that none of its sensitive information had been breached, and that the hackers had only gained access to inconsequential records.
All Sensitive University Information Remains Unassailable
According to the statement, the university’s ICT team is currently working to reinforce the security of its information system, and the institution is working with relevant security agencies to identify the source of the attack.
Dr. Suleiman, stated that cyber-attacks have become a growing concern globally, and the institution remains vigilant.
He also urged the public to contact the university’s information desk for any clarifications or inquiries.
“We assure the public that all sensitive University information remains unassailable and will always be inaccessible to fraudsters and every other intruder to the University’s information sites,” Dr. Suleiman said.
