In a bold move against alleged maltreatment, three esteemed lecturers of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, have taken legal action against their employer, citing a prolonged period of unpaid salaries totaling 27 months.
Prof. Fredrick Ikechukwu Esumeh, Prof. Monday Lewis Igbafen, and Dr. Zebedee Udo Mamudu, hailing from the Departments of Microbiology, Philosophy, and Economics respectively, have filed separate lawsuits at the National Industrial Court of Nigeria in the Benin Judicial Division. Spearheading their legal battle is Kingsley Obamogie, SAN, who represents their interests before the court.
The grievances outlined in their lawsuits include a declaration of the defendant’s negligence in honoring their contractual obligation to remunerate them since January 1, 2022. They label this failure as both wrongful and inhumane, asserting a breach of the existing contract of service between the parties.
Their demands are clear: restoration of salary payments and the settlement of all outstanding dues accrued from January 1, 2022, until the date of judgment in their respective cases. Additionally, they seek compensation in the form of N10,000,000.00 (ten million naira) each for the suffering endured due to the defendant’s alleged dereliction of duty.
These legal actions are detailed in separate Suit Numbers: NICN/BEN/15/2024; NICN/BEN/16/2024; and NICN/BEN/17/2024, with each lecturer listed as the claimant and Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, as the defendant.
Despite the filing of the suits, no hearing date has been set as they await adjudication before Justice A.A. Adewemimo of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, situated at No.4, Okada Avenue, Old Edo Hotel, G.R.A, Benin City, Edo State.
