Human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, has condemned a recent statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, in which he called for the “shoot-at-sight” punishment for vandals damaging public infrastructure.
In a post on her verified X handle on Sunday, Yesufu described Onanuga and his supporters as “the worst species of citizens” and accused them of perpetuating injustice through the current administration’s policies.
Yesufu argued that the individuals Onanuga targeted are victims of government neglect and systemic corruption, saying, “Without rule of law, justice and the right to a fair hearing, you and those you work for would also have since been shot, and these citizens might not have had to resort to the hideous criminality they are alleged to be engaging in.”
She further accused the government of destroying the lives of millions for selfish and greedy interests, warning that the shoot-at-sight rhetoric reflects a dangerous mindset among those in power.
Yesufu’s remarks follow Onanuga’s proposal that vandals caught destroying federal highways should face immediate execution – a comment that has sparked widespread criticism and debate across social media and civil society groups.
The activist’s criticism underscores growing concerns about human rights and rule of law in Nigeria, especially regarding the handling of protests and acts of civil disobedience.
