Prominent activist and #BringBackOurGirls movement convener, Aisha Yesufu, has fiercely responded to Nigerian singer Seun Kuti, following his criticism of her advocacy for women’s rights in Nigeria.

The dispute began when Kuti reacted to Yesufu’s campaign for women’s freedom, suggesting she should “liberate [herself] from [her] hijab first.”

In response, Yesufu took to her social media platform, X, to address Kuti’s remarks, accusing him of trying to gain relevance at her expense.

In a series of scathing posts, Yesufu took aim at Kuti’s heritage and career. She remarked, “Seun Kuti wants to trend with my name as his karaoke business no make him blow alongside those wey dey do music,” implying his career was failing to gain traction.

Yesufu further alluded to Seun Kuti’s late father, Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, suggesting his influence contributed to Seun’s behaviour.

She commented, “I don’t blame him! If only his father had discipline over his loin we wouldn’t be dealing with the consequences of that lack of discipline!”

In a final jab, she referred to Kuti’s performances, alleging that people only attend his shows to experience a shadow of his father’s legacy: “Person wey people dey book im show because dem wan see a caricature of his father even if they can’t have the real thing.”

The heated exchange has sparked discussions online, drawing reactions from Nigerians and fans alike on the ongoing debate surrounding women’s rights and societal expectations.
