The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has confirmed his marriage to Zynab Otiti Obanor, describing the union as a strictly private matter that has no bearing on his public responsibilities or political career.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the marriage was solemnised some time ago but deliberately kept away from public attention, in line with Akume’s long-held preference for privacy in personal affairs.
A senior aide to the SGF, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the decision to keep the marriage out of the public space was consistent with Akume’s character and leadership style.
“The SGF has always maintained a clear boundary between his private life and his constitutional duties. That principle remains unchanged,” the aide said.
Observers say the development offers a rare insight into the personal life of a public official known more for administrative stability than political theatrics.
From his years as Governor of Benue State to his tenure in the Senate and now as the Federal Government’s chief coordinator, Akume has largely avoided public drama, focusing instead on continuity and institutional order.
A long-time associate described the marriage as reflective of Akume’s temperament, noting that, “It mirrors his approach to leadership—measured, discreet and removed from unnecessary public spectacle.”
Zynab Otiti Obanor, his spouse, is said to be well regarded in philanthropic and development circles.
She is recognised for her work in community empowerment, leadership development and international engagement, having built her profile through sustained advocacy rather than media attention.
“She is accomplished in her own right and deeply committed to service. Their relationship is founded on mutual respect for each other’s independent paths,” a source close to the family disclosed.
Meanwhile, officials in the Office of the SGF stressed that the confirmation of the marriage would not distract from government business.
According to them, Akume remains fully focused on coordinating ministries, departments and agencies, as well as ensuring the effective implementation of President Bola Tinubu’s policy agenda.
“The work of government continues without interruption. The SGF’s priority remains service delivery and coordination at the highest level,” an official said.
For many within political circles, the confirmation reinforces a familiar narrative around Akume’s public life—one marked by discretion, service and a deliberate effort to keep personal milestones separate from the demands of national duty.
