The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has raised the alarm over a sophisticated scam involving the cloning of his voice and impersonation of his identity to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Akume revealed that criminal syndicates had successfully cloned his voice and were using it to call influential Nigerians, falsely offering them federal government appointments in exchange for money.
“The fraudsters cloned the voice of the SGF, using it to solicit money in return for federal appointments,” the statement read.
The SGF also disclosed that the perpetrators had cloned the phone numbers of other high-profile individuals to make their fraudulent activities appear legitimate.
He described the act as “an alarming abuse of technology” and urged members of the public to disregard any phone calls or messages purportedly from him or his office asking for payment in exchange for appointments or favours.
“The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation has been inundated with enquiries relating to the activities of these fraudulent individuals and groups,” Odunuga added.
Akume warned Nigerians to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to relevant authorities, stressing that his office does not demand any form of payment for appointments or services.
